Introduction
To meet rising water levels and expand its dewatering capabilities, First Quantum Minerals engaged Coerco to deliver a large volume of custom-engineered Multi Float® pipe floats—supporting critical infrastructure at the massive Cobre Panama mine site.
The Challenge
The mine required rapid access to dozens of floats to deploy discharge pipes up to 250m, pushing the limits of its existing system.
The floats had to support 1000mm and 1200mm pipe diameters, withstand extreme mine conditions, and maintain buoyancy even if compromised.
Shipping and assembling more than 170 oversized float components across borders and into remote zones demanded expert logistics and streamlined installation.
The Solution
Coerco built new float moulds and scaled production using in-house capabilities—delivering dozens of floats quickly without outsourcing delays.
Each float featured 17mm thick hexene polyethylene skin, internal marine-grade foam for guaranteed buoyancy, and galvanised fasteners for simple onsite installation.
Coerco organised transport of 170 float halves in 14 containers, ensuring safe delivery and quick deployment across the 13,600-hectare mine site.
